Who all watches the WNBA?...No?....Me either. But while I was at the gym last night, doing my squat thrusts, I couldn't help but notice the ESPN Game 2 high-lights of the WNBA Finals.
The Indiana Fever and Minnesota Lynx were all knotted up at 48 apiece last night in the 3rd quarter when a referee missed a call on a clear shooting foul by a Fever defender. Tough luck. Move on, right? WRONG!! The cameras panned over to Minnesota head coach Cheryl Reeve and the woman was going insane! She stormed out on to the floor, screaming at the ref and throwing her jacket at an assistant coach. You don't even see that kind of fire from men's coaches. Ok, maybe Woody Hayes, but not from most of them. The tirade seemed to light a fire under the team, and Minnesota went on to win the game 83 to 71.
Reeve's courtside antics may come across as an XX chromosome version of Bobby Knight, but she is like the great coach in more ways than one.
In her first season with the Lynx in 2010, Reeve's team went 13 and 21 during the regular season and missed out on the playoffs entirely. But in the past 2 seasons, she has turned the franchise completely around, leading them to a WNBA Championship title in 2011 and they're seeking another in 2012.
Women's Basketball is one of the very few sports where the amateur game is more high-profile than the professional teams. However, with passionate players and coaches like Cheryl Reeve, the WNBA can prove to sports fans everywhere that it is a product worth watching.
Here is the video from last night.
