Like the rest of you, I was shocked and deeply saddened when I heard about the bombings at the Boston Marathon this Monday. Not only did it send a jolt throughout the entire sports world, but it shook the whole nation as well.
Sports have, and always will be, a vital part of American culture. Some of us live and die for our teams. That is why sports will help us cope with this tragedy, much like they did after the shootings in Newtown and the attacks on the World Trade Center. I can still remember Mike Piazza’s home run right after the 9/11 attacks, and it rocks me to my core. Here’s a video if you haven’t see it.
I expect the same thing will happen tonight when the Boston Bruins score their first goal at the TD Garden. The players will embrace each other, the stands will erupt and the city of Boston will be able smile again, if only for a little while.
It won’t be easy, things like this never are, but I believe that with prayer, love and a little help from sports, we will get through this.
